A giant sinkhole suddenly appeared at the bottom of a fish pond in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, swallowing 25 tons of fish in a matter of hours.
The oval-shaped sinkhole, which has a diameter of 4-5 meters, drained up all the water in the fish pond along with the fish inside it. Yang Shuangxian, owner of the fish pond, couldn’t believe what lay before his eyes.
Local people suspected that the sudden appearance of the bottomless hole was caused by a nearby rock quarry, which had been pumping nearby water over the past few days, causing the collapse. The water level of another pond nearby has also dropped by half a meter, locals said.
Geological experts later arrived at the site. They found out that the hole was 60-70 meters deep and had a size of thousands of square meters, but they couldn’t determine whether it was caused by the nearby rock mining. However they also suggested filling in the hole as it might lead to other possible disaster – without considering the pond owner’s pain over what to do about the loss of his fish.
